The Confidence

The Floor Routine

One of the most artistic events is floor. While doing all of the tumbling passes you also have all the dance along with it, Gymnast gets to pick music that they feel best represents them,or that they just like. Often the gymnast will be out on the floor putting on a show. Sometimes their music is happy and upbeat, and they will be smiling. Other cases the music will be more dramatic and serious but either way it is really enrapturing.  One of the scariest things during a meet is when you are up on the floor and the gym is mostly silent and then your music comes on. Most people’s heads will turn onto you. All the pressure is on. How does this connect to body image? Well, you are out there in a small fitting piece of clothing dancing around on the biggest event in the gym. For some, this can be really nerve racking, because some people feel they are too big or small.

In this video we can see the gymnast, Nia Dennis, another UCLA gymnast, doing her floor routine. She is very upbeat and her choreography is really good. However, it is hard to put on a show like that. It is hard to be that energetic when you have all these eyes on you. The other thing is judges not only expect you to have straight legs and pointed toes on this event, they expect presentation. If your choreography or presentation isn’t energetic enough or capturing, they will take off points from your score.

The Confidence

When a person is one either already really self conscious or they get stage fright, it can be really hard to get out there and perform. If a gymnast is not feeling themselves, they will not present and they will get docked off points. Being a gymnast, getting a poor score can really affect how you feel about yourself, not only did you want to do good, your coaches will be mad at you, and you feel like you let them and your parents down.  So if you are self conscious about yourself are you going to do good on the floor? Most likely not. It takes a lot of confidence to get out there. If a person feels like they don’t look good enough or they are too big, you won’t present well. And if you don’t present well, your score won’t be good and you feel worse.

This all comes down to the same idea. Being able to look the part. This isn’t fair to the gymnasts who are not big presenters because of how they look. It is not fair for them, and we need to make changes, because don’t forget, there’s also four other events. This is why gymnasts have these problems. Because gymnastics is a very competitive sport and they feel the need to win Well, some will go to the lengths of eating disorders to win. Gymnastics is a wonderful sport that teaches you so much, however this issue can and must be changed.
